How to Set Up WordPress to Start a New Blog

WordPress for New Bloggers

WordPress is one of the most popular blogging platform because it is easy to use and doesn't require any knowledge of coding.

The WordPress platform enables you to easily set up a blog that you can customize to become uniquely yours.

Are you ready to set up your WordPress blog and start publishing? Take a look at this guide for using WordPress to launch your blog, and start blogging today!

Getting Started

First, you'll go to, and click the blue button "Get Started." From there you will be directed to some questions about the blog you are setting up, and asked to create an account with WordPress.

Don't worry too much about the category, just pick the one you think is closest. You also don't need to worry about the theme, as you can go back and change it later. You can even skip that step by clicking the link at the bottom of the page.

Selecting the domain name is an important step for setting up your blog. Ideally, you want a domain name that is memorable, reflective of your brand and personality, and uses keywords related to the topic of you blog. WordPress has a whole article on choosing a domain name that can help you.

From there you will select a plan for the blog. The free plan is great for beginning bloggers, and you can always upgrade later if you decide you need some of the extra features. Next, you will create your account. Once your account is created, you will be brought to your brand new blog!

Setting Up Your Blog

The "My Site" menu contains all of the options for customizing your site. On that menu, underneath the "personalize" heading, you can browse through all the available themes and get a better idea of what they look like by previewing them.

Once you have selected a theme, you can now customize your site. It's ok if you aren't certain about how you want your blog to look just yet. Spend some time playing with all of the features until you are happy with how it looks.

You can preview your site any time by clicking your site's name at the top of the "My Site" menu. There is a bit of a learning curve when it comes to customizing a WordPress site, but it is much easier than learning website coding!

Pages and Blog Posts

It's important to note that pages and blog posts are two separate categories of content on your WordPress site. The pages you create will be static parts of the site, while blog posts will appear on the site from newest to oldest.

You can set up your site to make your blog the home page, or you can create a separate home page that will link to your blog. Some of the themes have separate pages built into them such as an "about" page and a "contact" page. You can fill out those pages if you would like, or delete them and just focus on blogging.

When you are ready to start blogging, simply click "add" next to "blog posts" on the "my site" menu. You can add pictures, videos, and sound files to the blog post, and add tags and categories to make the blog post more search engine friendly and easier to find on your site.

Although the number of customizable options on the WordPress platform can be a little bit overwhelming, WordPress really is the easiest website platform to use. You'll have an awesome blog up and running in no time! Happy Blogging!
